Recycle a soda can and turn it into a unique cable car. Place it in your room and watch it go up and down, from side to side. Learn exciting information about mechanical science through this fun construction.
HOW IT WORKS: The batteries provide electricity to the motor that spins the pulley at high speed. The pulleys reduce the rotation speed, so the wheel at the top turns quite slowly. This wheel acts as a feeding wheel, as it pulls the string, which in turn pulls the cable car along it. The friction created between the string and the feeding wheel prevents the cable car from slipping. The reversing switch changes the direction of the current flowing through the motor. When the switch is on, it makes the motor turn in the opposite direction. When the aerial cable car reaches the stop at the end of the wire, the reversing shaft is pressed, activating the reversing switch, making the aerial cable car start again.
